Garden & Barn Cats

Not every cat wants to be a house cat—and that's okay! Animal Outreach's Garden & Barn Cat Program helps place healthy outdoor cats into homes, farms, ranches, gardens, vineyards, workshops, and other properties where they can thrive while providing natural rodent control.

Garden Cats are generally more social and people-friendly. They enjoy spending time outdoors hunting rodents but may also enjoy human companionship and time indoors.

Barn Cats are independent working cats that prefer living outdoors full-time and typically have little interest in being handled or living as indoor pets.

Whether you're looking for a friendly outdoor companion or a dedicated working cat, adopting a Garden or Barn Cat provides a homeless cat with a safe place to live while helping protect your property through natural, chemical-free pest control.

Why Adopt a Garden or Barn Cat?

🐾 Give a Cat a Second Chance
Provide a safe home for a cat that may not be suited for traditional indoor living.

🐭 Natural Rodent Control
Garden and Barn Cats help control mice, rats, gophers, moles, and other nuisance rodents without the use of harmful chemicals or poisons.

🌱 Environmentally Friendly Pest Management
Reduce rodent populations naturally while avoiding pesticides and other toxic control methods.

🏡 A Solution for Homes, Farms, and Businesses
Whether you have a garden, barn, ranch, vineyard, workshop, warehouse, or acreage, a working cat can be a valuable addition to your property.

❤️ Companionship or Independence
Garden Cats can provide companionship while helping control rodents, while Barn Cats thrive as independent working cats.

💲 Affordable Adoption Fees
Each adoption includes important veterinary care, making it an economical way to add natural pest control to your property.

What You'll Need

🏠 Safe Shelter
A barn, shed, garage, workshop, stable, warehouse, or other structure where the cat can escape predators and severe weather.

💧 Fresh Water Daily
Clean water must always be available.

🍽️ Daily Food
Even the best hunters need regular meals. Feeding your cat daily helps keep them healthy and encourages them to stay on your property.

📦 A Secure Acclimation Area
A large kennel, enclosed stall, tack room, shed, garage, or similar space where the cat can safely adjust to their new home before being released.

🛏️ Comfortable Resting Area
A cat bed, blanket, straw bedding, or other cozy space where the cat can feel secure.

📍 A Long-Term Commitment
Garden and Barn Cats depend on their caretakers for food, water, shelter, and veterinary care throughout their lives.

🐾 Patience During the Transition
Allow time for your new cat to settle in and learn that your property is their new home.

How to Acclimate Your Garden or Barn Cat

Step 1: Provide a Secure Space
Keep your new Barn Cat in a secure area such as a barn, shed, garage, tack room, or large kennel for a minimum of four weeks.

Step 2: Meet Their Daily Needs
Provide food, water, a litter box, and a comfortable hiding place. Spend a few minutes talking to them each day so they become familiar with your presence and voice.

Step 3: Gradually Allow Exploration
After the acclimation period, open the enclosure and allow your cat to explore at their own pace. Continue providing food, water, and access to their shelter as they adjust to life on your property.

🐾 The longer a cat remains safely confined during the acclimation period, the more likely they are to stay and consider your property home.
